What
does EPA3 stand for?
The "EPA3" stands for "Ethernet Power Adapter with 3
LAN ports".
What
does it do?
The EPA3 has 2 functions. One function is to convert power over Ethernet
into a standard 12 Vdc plug. The other function is to provide a three
port Ethernet switch. It can perform each function individually or simultaneously.
What
problem does the EPA3 solve?
The EPA3 allows organizations to reduce the amount of cabling required
from the network room to the desktop. By redistributing Power over Ethernet
into a standard power adapter, companies can use existing Power over
Ethernet infrastructure. By providing a 3 port switch, companies can
eliminate the need to run an extra set of Ethernet cables to provide
an extra Ethernet port.
Does
it redistribute the power over Ethernet from the network input to the
other LAN ports?
No. The ports provided for connection to IP devices do not have power
over Ethernet on them. The power over Ethernet is converted into a standard
12 Vdc output.
What
application is the EPA3 primarily for?
The EPA3 is primarily for VoIP applications within a company that uses
Power over Ethernet switches. The EPA3 connects to both the LAN port
and 12 Vdc power connector of an IP phone. It also connects to PC to
provide full line rate access for both the PC and phone.
Functions
Does
the EPA3 have auto sensing LAN ports ?
Yes. All three ports have auto sensors.
What
is the polarity of the 12 Vdc output ?
Center of connector has the 12 Vdc.
Does
the 12 Vdc output require a special cable?
The 12 Vdc output has a built in cable that is one meter long.
Can
I use it only for the 12 Vdc output ?
Yes. You do not have to connect anything to the other two LAN ports.
Can
I use it only for the Ethernet switch?
Yes. You do not have to provide Power over Ethernet to the network port.
However, if power over Ethernet is absent, you are required to connect
a 12 Vdc power adapter to the switch. The EPA3 comes with the transformer
for this purpose.
Do
I need to use the AC adapter with the EPA3?
No. The AC adapter is optional if you want to use the three port switch
without power over Ethernet present.
Does
the transformer input provide power over Ethernet to any of the LAN
ports?
No.
Is
there anything to configure on the EPA3 ?
No. It is an unmanaged switch with no interface.
Open
Standards
What is
Power over Ethernet?
PoE eliminates the need to run 110/220 VAC power to network devices
on a wired LAN. Using Power over Ethernet (PoE) system installers need
to run only a single CAT5 Ethernet cable that carries both power and
data to each device.
Which power
over Ethernet protocols does it convert?
The EPA3 can take in power over Ethernet as defined by 802.3af or by
Cisco's proprietary inline power.
What is
IEEE 802.3af?
IEEE 802.3af is the official standard for Power over Ethernet ratified
by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers).
What is
Cisco's power over Ethernet?
Cisco created a proprietary version of power over Ethernet (called "inline
power") before the IEEE 802.3af standard became official.
Which Ethernet
protocols is used?
All three ports on the EPA3 are 10/100 Base-T with auto sensing abilities
for polarity of transmit and receive.
Does the
EPA3 run any VoIP protocol?
No. The EPA3 is a device that only switches IP traffic, and thus has
no application software.
What IP
phones can use the EPA3?
The ZIP 2 and any other IP phone that has a 3 mm 12 Vdc input.
Packaging
What
colors is the EPA3 available in?
Black or bone.
What
does the EPA3 come with?
EPA3 unit and power transformer.
