Phone Systems
Can
the ZIP 2P be used with any phone system?
The ZIP 2P is compatible with any system or network that uses SIP for
call control.
Do
I need to use the ZIP 2P with a PC?
No. The ZIP 2P is a stand alone IP phone that is fully functional without
a PC.
Can
I make a call between two ZIP 2P phones without a phone system?
Yes. For simplicity, both phones should have a fixed IP address. You can
enter the IP address into a memory location and make a call between the
phones with one-touch dialling.
When
using the ZIP 2P do I also need to use the MX1200, MX250, or the MXIE?
No. Although the ZIP 2P can be used with the MX1200 or MX250 (which includes
MXIE), it does not require the MX1200, MX250, or MXIE to operate.
Open Standards
What
VoIP protocols are supported on the ZIP 2P?
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) per RFC 3261.
What
operating system does the ZIP 2P use?
The ZIP 2P runs on a real time Linux operating system.
Does
the ZIP 2P support H.323 or MGCP?
No. Zultys believes that the extensibility and flexibility of SIP provide
significant advantages over alternative protocols.
Does
the ZIP 2P support Skinny (SCCP)?
No. This is a proprietary protocol used by Cisco, and is supported by
only a few manufacturers. See the question below about which Cisco phones
can operate with the ZIP 2P.
Does
the ZIP 2P support Quality of Service (QoS)?
Yes. QoS is provided at the Ethernet layer according to IEEE 802.1p and
at the IP layer using Differentiated Services (Diffserv).
Does
the ZIP 2P support voice compression?
Yes. It supports G.729A and G.711 (µ law or A law). With G.711,
the used bandwidth is about 85 kb/s (21 kb/s for overhead). With G.729A
the used bandwidth is about 24 kb/s.
Does
the ZIP 2P support power over Ethernet (PoE)?
Yes. It supports the IEEE 802.3af power over Ethernet standard. It is
a class 2 device (half power) and therefore the maximum power it will
draw from any IEEE 802.3af compliant Ethernet switch is 7 W. The ZIP 2P
also ships with an ac adapter which can be used to supply power to the
phone.
Deployment
How
is the ZIP 2P configured for the first time?
The ZIP 2P can be rapidly configured using a configuration file that it
receives from a TFTP server. The phone can also be configured manually
using the menus.
How
does the ZIP 2P get its IP address, and how does it know where to register?
The ZIP 2P normally uses DHCP. The DHCP server returns an IP address,
the domain name, and the address of the TFTP server. The ZIP 2P reads
its configuration file from the TFTP server that contains the address
of the phone system with which it should register.
Can
the ZIP 2P use DNS_SRV to obtain the address of the SIP Registrar?
Yes. If there is no configuration file, or if the file doesn't specify
the address of the SIP Registrar, the ZIP 2P uses DNS SRV to obtain that
address.
How
are are multiple ZIP 2Ps deployed?
The most convenient method is for the phone system to create configuration
files for each of the phones, and to save those files on a TFTP server.
When the phone powers up, it accesses its unique file from the TFTP server.
The MX250 automatically creates these files and streamlines the process
to make the deployment of hundreds of phones fast and efficient. An entire
network of phones can be deployed in less than one minute per phone.
Can
I disable DHCP?
Yes. However, if you disable DHCP, you must manually set the IP address,
domain name, subnet mask, and addresses of the default gateway, DNS server,
SNTP server, TFTP server, and SIP proxy.
Which
IP phones can I use along side the ZIP 2P?
The ZIP 2P is a SIP-based phone that can communicate with any other SIP
based phone. Zultys tests its products for compatibility with phones from
multiple suppliers.
Functionality
What
does ZIP 2P stand for?
The "ZIP" stands for "Zultys IP Phone". The "2P"
refers to the phone's two call appearances and power over Ethernet feature.
What
functions are supported by the ZIP 2P?
The ZIP 2P is the world's most feature rich business phone on the market
today. For a list of all of its specifications, see the Technical Summary.
Does
the ZIP 2P have two call appearances or two lines?
A call appearance represents an individual phone call. A line represents
an individual SIP account, which sends a unique SIP registration. Regardless
of the number of lines or the number of call appearances, the phone has
a single Ethernet circuit to connect to the network or phone system. The
ZIP 2P has two call appearances on one line.
If
the phone has only a single line, can it be shared among many users?
Yes. Significant flexibility and simplicity is obtained by the phone having
a single registration with the phone system. The mechanism to share the
phone among many users can then be handled by the software of the phone
system. With the MX250, hundreds of users share a single phone, each with
their own unique extension or SIP address.
How
is the ZIP 2P powered?
The ZIP 2x2 can be powered via the IEEE 802.3af power over Ethernet standard
or with an ac adapter which can be used to supply power to the phone.
Does
the ZIP 2P support video or fax calls?
No.
Does
the ZIP 2P support voice encryption?
No.
Can
I use a headset with the ZIP 2P?
Yes. You can connect a headset in series with the handset connector. The
switch box usually has an amplifier that is powered either from an ac
outlet or from batteries. This box allows you to select between using
the handset and using a headset.
Are
features buried in softkeys and menus?
No. The ZIP 2P has single buttons to access the two call appearances,
change volume, access voice mail, activate do not disturb, transfer, hold,
conference, and access speaker phone.
Conferencing
Does
the ZIP 2P support conferencing?
Yes. The ZIP 2P supports conferencing of up to three parties. You can
add one additional call (incoming or outgoing) to a conference. This greatly
reduces the cost and preparation required to set up third party conference
bridges for your enterprise.
Can
I put a conference call on hold?
No. The ZIP 2x2 and ZIP2x1 can put a conference call on hold.
How
do I initiate a conference call with an existing call?
If you have an existing call, press the Conference button and dial the
next number. The person on the existing call can hear you dial the new
number and they can hear the new call being answered.
When
adding a call to a conference, can I consult the person before adding
him or her to the conference?
Yes. If you are on an existing conference call, and you wish to consult
with someone before adding him or her, press the Hold button to put the
conference call on hold. Next, select the free call appearance and dial
the number of the person with whom you wish to consult. If the person
agrees to being added to the conference, press the Conference button.
Can
I add an incoming call to a conference call?
Yes. If you are on a call, and you receive an incoming call, press the
Conference button to immediately join the caller to the conference. Alternatively,
press Hold, then answer the incoming call if you wish to consult with
the caller before adding him or her to the conference.
Can
participants leave a conference without disrupting others?
Yes. The host is not required to take any action. Participants can hang
up.
Can
I remove participants from a conference without disrupting others?
Yes. With the LCD, you can see which caller occupies which call appearance.
To remove a participant, press the associate call appearance button.
If
my ZIP 2P is hosting a conference call, can I leave the conference call
without disrupting the other callers?
Yes. When you put a conference call on hold, you leave the conference
call without interrupting the other participants. Your ZIP 2P is still
hosting the conference bridge, and your call appearances are still occupied.
Ethernet
Switch
How
many devices can I connect directly to the ZIP 2P?
One. The ZIP 2P has one 10/100Base-T Ethernet port to connect to a LAN.
Can
I connect more than two devices to the LAN through the ZIP 2P?
Yes. Because the ZIP 2P is a line rate Ethernet switch, you can cascade
multiple ZIP 2Ps and switches. Cascading devices in this fashion provides
the equivalent functionality of multiple switches in a network room.
With
multiple devices connected to the ZIP 2P, how is QoS enforced?
Quality of service is implemented at the Ethernet layer according to IEEE
802.1p and at the IP layer according to the Differentiated Services (Diffserv)
RFCs. Internally the switch prioritizes voice traffic over data traffic
to ensure consistent voice quality.
What
kind of status can I view for the Ethernet switch?
The ZIP 2P can display the status of each port as being disconnected or
connected.
Call
Handling
If
a ZIP 2P is assigned to multiple people, can I know whom the incoming
call is for?
Yes. With the ZIP 2P, both calling and called party information is shown
on the display. This allows users to quickly distinguish who the incoming
call is for.
Does
the ZIP 2P support the DND (Do Not Disturb) feature?
Yes. When DND is set, the ZIP 2P immediately rejects any incoming call
without making any sound or visual indication of the call. The phone system
may then disconnect the call, provide busy to the caller, or forward the
call to voice mail.
Can
I send an incoming call to my voice mail while the phone is ringing?
Yes. By pressing the DND button, you can direct an incoming call to the
voice mail while the phone is ringing. You access this feature with a
button and do not have to navigate a menu system.
Can
I set unconditional call forwarding?
Yes. The phone neither rings nor displays call information on the LCD
if this is set.
Can
I set call forwarding on busy or no answer?
No. The ZIP2x2 and ZIP 2x1 supports unconditional call forwarding, forwarding
on busy and fowarding on no answer.
Does
the ZIP 2P support "hot key" dialling?
No. The ZIP 2x2 and ZIP 2x1 support "hot key" dialling.
