Can
the ZIP 4x5 be used with any phone system?
The ZIP 4x5 is compatible with any system or network that uses SIP for
call control.
Do
I need to use the ZIP 4x5 with a PC?
No. The ZIP 4x5 is a stand alone IP phone that is fully functional without
a PC.
Can
I make a call between two ZIP 4x5 phones without a phone system?
Yes. For simplicity, both phones should have a fixed IP address. You
can enter the IP address into a memory location and make a call between
the phones with one-touch dialling.
When
using the ZIP 4x5 do I also need to use the MX1200, MX250, or the MXIE?
No. Although the ZIP 4x5 can be used with the MX1200 or MX250 (which
includes MXIE), it does not require the MX1200, MX250, or MXIE to operate.
Open Standards
What
VoIP protocols are supported on the ZIP 4x5?
Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) per RFC 3261.
What
operating system does the ZIP 4x5 use?
The ZIP 4x5 runs on a real time Linux operating system.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support H.323 or MGCP?
No. Zultys believes that the extensibility and flexibility of SIP provide
significant advantages over alternative protocols.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support Skinny (SCCP)?
No. This is a proprietary protocol used by Cisco, and is supported by
only a few manufacturers. See the question below about which Cisco phones
can operate with the ZIP 4x5.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support Quality of Service (QoS)?
Yes. QoS is provided at the Ethernet layer according to IEEE 802.1p
and at the IP layer using Differentiated Services (Diffserv).
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support voice compression?
Yes. Its support G.729A and G.711 (µ law or A law). With G.711,
the used bandwidth is about 85 kb/s (21 kb/s for overhead). With G.729A
the used bandwidth is about 24 kb/s.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support PPPoE?
Yes.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support power over Ethernet (PoE)?
Yes. It supports the IEEE 802.3af power over Ethernet standard. It is
a class 2 device (half power) and therefore the maximum power it will
draw from any IEEE 802.3af compliant Ethernet switch is 7 W. The ZIP
4x5 also ships with an ac adapter which can be used to supply power
to the phone.
Deployment
How
is the ZIP 4x5 configured for the first time?
The ZIP 4x5 can be rapidly configured using a configuration file that
it receives from a TFTP server. The phone can also be configured manually
using the menus.
How
does the ZIP 4x5 get its IP address, and how does it know where to register?
The ZIP 4x5 normally uses DHCP. The DHCP server returns an IP address,
the domain name, and the address of the TFTP server. The ZIP 4x5 reads
its configuration file from the TFTP server that contains the address
of the phone system with which it should register.
Can
the ZIP 4x5 user DNS_SRV to obtain the address of the SIP Registrar?
Yes. If there is no configuration file, or if the file doesn't specify
the address of the SIP Registrar, the ZIP 4x5 uses DNS SRV to obtain
that address.
How
are are multiple ZIP 4x5s deployed?
The most convenient method is for the phone system to create configuration
files for each of the phones, and to save those files on a TFTP server.
When the phone powers up, it accesses its unique file from the TFTP
server. The MX1200 automatically creates these files and streamlines
the process to make the deployment of hundreds of phones fast and efficient.
An entire network of phones can be deployed in less than one minute
per phone.
Is
there a DHCP server for devices that are connected to the switch?
Yes.
Can
I disable the DHCP client?
Yes. However, if you disable DHCP, you must manually set the IP address,
domain name, subnet mask, and addresses of the default gateway, DNS
server, SNTP server, TFTP server, and SIP proxy.
Which
IP phones can I use along side the ZIP 4x5?
The ZIP 4x5 is a SIP-based phone that can communicate with any other
SIP based phone. Zultys tests its products for compatibility with phones
from multiple suppliers. Click here for the interoperability list.
Functionality
What
does ZIP 4x5 stand for?
The "ZIP " stands for "Zultys IP Phone". The "4x
5" refers to the phone's four call appearances and five external
Ethernet and analog ports.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 have four call appearances or four lines?
A call appearance represents an individual phone call. A line represents
an individual SIP account, which sends a unique SIP registration. Regardless
of the number of lines or the number of call appearances, the phone
has a single Ethernet circuit to connect to the network or phone system.
The ZIP 4x5 has four call
appearances on one line.
What
are the difference between a ZIP 4x4 and ZIP 4x5?
The ZIP 4x5 includes all the functionality of the ZIP 4x4, and adds
functionality of VPN, firewall, router, DHCP server, and analog phone.
It also includes support for Bluetooth for wireless headsets.
If
the phone has only a single line, can it be shared among many users?
Yes. Significant flexibility and simplicity is obtained by the phone
having a single registration with the phone system. The mechanism to
share the phone among many users can then be handled by the software
of the phone system. With the MX250 or the MX1200, hundreds of users
share a single phone, each with their own unique extension or SIP address.
How
is the ZIP 4x5 powered?
See the question above.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support video or fax calls?
No.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support voice encryption?
Yes. The ZIP 4x5 can use Secure RTP and AES encryption to transport
voice traffic in a secure manner. Users can engage this function before
or during a call by pressing the Encrypt button on the phone.
What
operations can I use the calculator for?
The calculator provides addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
With the multiple lines on the LCD, you can see all of the numbers and
operands of a calculation. The calculation is not performed until you
press the equals key. The calculator supports scientific notation.
Can
I use the calculator during a call and between calls?
Yes. The calculator can be used when the phone is idle or when the phone
is in use. If you answer an incoming call during a computation, you
will still have access to the same computation during and after the
phone call.
What
user preferences are available?
You can configure the date format, 24-hr or 12 hr clock, regional call
progress tones, contrast, ring volume, speakerphone volume, handset
volume, headset volume, phone book, LCD greeting message, internal ring
tone, external ring tone, internal call waiting, hold reminder tone,
keypad click, and automatic call answering.
Are
features buried in softkeys and menus?
No. The ZIP 4x5 has single buttons to access any of the four call appearances,
change volume, access voice mail, activate headset, engage do not disturb,
redial, transfer, hold, conference, mute, access speaker phone, and
call park.
You use 2 key presses to
access the calculator, speed dial, call pickup, forward an incoming
call, activate paging, access user login, and activate encryption.
Can
I lock the keypad of my phone?
Yes. You can lock the keypad as you do most mobile phones by pressing
the Menu button and then the star button on the keypad.
Connections
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support analog calls?
Yes. The analog RJ11 connector on the back of the ZIP 4x5 provides a
single analog connection to the local PSTN.
When
used at the remote office, how are emergency calls handled on the ZIP
4x5?
The ZIP 4x5 has an emergency dial plan that routes calls to a specified
emergency number over the analog line instead of over the IP connection.
How
does the ZIP 4x5 integrate a five port Ethernet switch when there are
only four Ethernet ports?
The ZIP 4x5 integrates a five port hardware switch that is separate
from the IP phone. One of the five ports on the switch is permanently
connected to the IP phone.
Hands

Can
I use a headset with the ZIP 4x5?
Yes. The ZIP 4x5 supports Bluetooth for use with a wireless headset.
The ZIP 4x5 also has a 2.5mm headset jack and a Hook button to activate
the headset. You can also use headsets that plug into the handset connector.
Does
a headset come with the shipment of a ZIP 4x5?
Yes. The ZIP 4x5 is shipped with a wired 2.5 mm headset, but the 2.5
mm jack is a standard connector that allows you to acquire the headset
of your choice from a vast number of suppliers. A Bluetooth wireless
headset is shipped with the ZIP 4x5 as an option.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 have a speakerphone?
Yes. The ZIP 4x5 has a full duplex speakerphone that has built in acoustic
echo cancellation, which makes it suitable for a conference room environment.

the ZIP 4x5 be used as an intercom?
Yes. You can configure the phone to automatically answer all internal
calls after one ring through the speakerphone.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 have voice activated features?
Yes. You can train the device to recognize your voice for certain commands.
You can also train it to recognize 10 spoken names within your local
address book.
Conferencing
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support conferencing?
Yes. The ZIP 4x5 supports conferencing of up to five parties. You can
dynamically add up to four additional calls (incoming or outgoing) to
a conference. This greatly reduces the cost and preparation required
to set up third party conference bridges for your enterprise.
Can
I put a conference call on hold?
Yes. When you press the Hold button while a conference call is active,
the entire conference call is on hold and you are free to make other
calls or place the handset back on hook. One key advantage to putting
a conference call on hold on the ZIP 4x5 is that the other participants
can continue with the call without hearing music on hold. You can easily
retrieve the call by pressing the Conference button again.
How
do I initiate a conference call with an existing call?
If you have an existing call, press the Conference button and dial the
next number. You can add up to three other calls using this method.
Everyone on the existing conference can hear you dial the new call and
they can hear the new call being answered.
When
adding a call to a conference, can I consult the person before adding
him or her to the conference?
Yes. If you are on an existing conference call, and you wish to consult
with someone before adding him or her, press the Hold button to put
the conference call on hold. Next, select a free call appearance and
dial the number of the person with whom you wish to consult. If the
person agrees to being added to the conference, press the Conference
button.
Can
I add an incoming call to a conference call?
Yes. If you are on a conference call, and you receive an incoming call,
press the Conference button to immediately join the caller to the conference.
Alternatively, press Hold, then answer the incoming call if you wish
to consult with the caller before adding him or her to the conference.
Can
participants leave a conference without disrupting others?
Yes. The host is not required to take any action. Participants can hang
up.
Can
I remove participants from a conference without disrupting others?
Yes. With the LCD, you can see which caller occupies which call appearance.
To remove a participant, press the associate call appearance button.
If
my ZIP 4x5 is hosting a conference call, can I leave the conference
call without disrupting the other callers?
Yes. When you put a conference call on hold, you leave the conference
call without interrupting the other participants. Your ZIP 4x5 is still
hosting the conference bridge, and your call appearances are still occupied.
If you have a free call appearance, you can make or receive other calls
without disrupting the conference. You can rejoin the conference at
any time.
Can
I park a conference call and pick up the call at another phone?
Yes, when used with the MX250 or MX1200. When you park a conference
call that was hosted by your ZIP 4x5, you can pick up that same group
of calls from another ZIP 4x5 registered with the same MX system. This
gives you the ability to continue a conference call anywhere in the
enterprise. The other participants of a parked conference call will
hear music on hold until you pick up the conference call.
Ethernet
Switch
How
many devices can I connect directly to the ZIP 4x5?
Four IP devices. The ZIP 4x5 has four 10/100Base-T Ethernet ports to
connect to a switch and three additional devices such as PCs, printers,
scanners, and PDAs.
With
multiple devices connected to the ZIP 4x5, will the throughput rate
degrade?
No. The ZIP 4x5 has an internal 5 port switch based on hardware. It
is capable of switching at wire speed on all ports so that the data
throughput rate will never degrade. For example, if your network is
operating at 100 Mb/s, devices downstream of the ZIP 4x5 have full access
to the 100 Mb/s data rate while your phone is on hook.
Can
I connect more than four devices to the LAN through the ZIP 4x5?
Yes. Because the ZIP 4x5 is a line rate Ethernet switch, you can cascade
multiple ZIP 4x5s and switches. Cascading devices in this fashion provides
the equivalent functionality of multiple switches in a network room.
With
multiple devices connected to the ZIP 4x5, how is QoS enforced?
Quality of service is implemented at the Ethernet layer according to
IEEE 802.1p and at the IP layer according to the Differentiated Services
(Diffserv) RFCs. Internally the switch prioritizes voice traffic over
data traffic to ensure consistent voice quality.
What
kind of status can I view for the Ethernet switch?
From the phone menu, you can view the connection status of each Ethernet
port. The ZIP 4x5 can display the status of each port as being disconnected,
10 Mb/s, 100 Mb/s, half duplex, or full duplex.
Call
Handling
If
a ZIP 4x5 is assigned to multiple people, can I know whom the incoming
call is for?
Yes. With the ZIP 4x5, both calling and called party information is
shown on the display. This allows users to quickly distinguish who the
incoming call is for.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support the DND (Do Not Disturb) feature?
Yes. When DND is set, the ZIP 4x5 immediately rejects any incoming call
without making any sound or visual indication of the call. The phone
system may then disconnect the call, provide busy to the caller, or
forward the call to voice mail.
Can
I send an incoming call to my voice mail while the phone is ringing?
Yes. By pressing the DND button, you can direct an incoming call to
the voice mail while the phone is ringing. You access this feature with
a button and do not have to navigate a menu system.
Can
I set unconditional call forwarding?
Yes. The phone neither rings nor displays call information on the LCD
if this is set.
Can
I set call forwarding on busy or no answer?
Yes.
With
the ZIP 4x5, can you enable call forwarding at the destination?
Yes. The ZIP 4x5 allows a user to log in to indicate that he or she
can now be reached at this particular ZIP 4x5. This feature (called
"here I am") is fully supported with the MX1200.
Can
multiple users log into the ZIP 4x5 that is assigned to me?
Yes. The ZIP 4x5 can allow up to 64 guests log into a phone to receive
their calls.
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support "hot key" dialling?
Yes. Dial tone is not required to initiate a call. You can dial a number
using the keypad or recall a number from the redial function, address
book, or call log, and then press a call appearance button to initiate
the call.
Can
an analog call on the ZIP 4x5 be transferred across the WAN to the MX250,
MX1200, or other IP-PBX?
Yes. The call is converted into a SIP call from the ZIP 4x5 to the IP-PBX.
Can
you create a conference call with the caller on the analog line and
extensions from the WAN?
Yes.
What
happens if I do not answer an incoming analog call?
If you don't answer in incoming analog call, the call is sent to the
IP-PBX at the corporate office. That IP-PBX (MX250 or MX1200, for example)
will route the call based on your call handling rules. Therefore, if
you have another phone at the corporate office, that phone can ring.
The call can also go to voice mail on the IP-PBX.
Call
Logs and Address Books
What
call logs are available?
The ZIP 4x5 can recall the last 32 numbers for incoming calls, and the
last 32 numbers for outgoing calls. The date and time is saved for each
entry.
Is
there an indication that I missed a call?
Yes. The phone shows the number of calls that you missed on the LCD.
If someone leaves a message, the LED on the Message button flashes.
To retrieve the message, press the Message button.
How
many numbers can be stored in the address book?
100. The address book can store each entry with a name, telephone number,
and SIP address.
Can
I add a new contact or perform a search for a specific name directly
from the phone?
Yes.
Regional
Options
Does
the ZIP 4x5 support regional call progress tones?
Yes. Dial tone, busy tone, congestion tone, and ringback are locally
provided by ZIP 4x5. By selecting the specific country, the ZIP 4x5
generates the appropriate call progress tones. Specifically, the ZIP
4x5 has tones for Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Israel, Italy,
New Zealand, UK, and USA.
Can
I change the date and time format?
Yes. You can choose from 11 different formats for the display of the
date, including variations of the order of day, month, and year.
Can
I change the number format?
Yes. You can have spaces, commas, or periods to signify thousands or
decimal points.
Phone
Configuration
Is
the phone configuration password protected?
Yes. All settings that might prevent the phone from operating properly
within the network are protected by password. You can change the password
at anytime.
Can
I change the ring tone?
Yes. You can select from several different ring tones available for
the internal and external calls. In addition, you can choose a custom
ring tone from a WAV file stored on an http server.
How
does the phone obtain the date and time?
The phone obtains GMT from the NTP server and the offset from GMT from
its configuration files. If your network does not have access to an
SNTP server, you can set the date and time manually.
Can
I configure a 24 hour clock?
Yes. The ZIP 4x5 can be configured to display either a 12 hour or 24
hour clock.
Administration
and Relocation
How
do I uniquely identify the ZIP 4x5?
Each ZIP 4x5 is uniquely identified by its MAC address. You can find
the MAC address on a label on the underside of the phone, or you can
view it on the LCD on the phone configuration.
How
do I upgrade the software on the ZIP 4x5?
You put the new software onto the TFTP server. Next, change the configuration
file for the ZIP 4x5 to indicate the new version. Then reboot the ZIP
4x5. The update process usually takes about two minutes.
When you deploy
